Why a dirty bottom costs more than it looks

Marine growth on a hull is not a cosmetic problem. It is a drag problem, and the numbers are larger than owners expect.

A hull with a soft slime layer already carries measurably more drag than a clean one. Once barnacles and hard growth establish, the effect is substantial - the boat is slower at the same throttle, the engine works harder for the same speed, and fuel consumption rises accordingly. On a boat used regularly, the fuel difference alone often exceeds the cost of keeping the bottom clean.

Running gear matters even more than the hull. Propellers are precision surfaces, and fouling on blades disrupts the flow they depend on. A fouled prop loses efficiency out of proportion to the amount of growth on it, and it can introduce vibration that works on shafts, bearings and seals.

Warm water grows things fast

The Gulf here is warm for most of the year, and warm water is productive water. Growth rates on this coast are considerably faster than in cooler climates, and the interval between cleanings that would be sensible further north is not sensible here.

Boats that sit still foul fastest. Movement and the water flow it creates discourage settlement, so a vessel used weekly stays cleaner than an identical one that has not left the slip since spring - which is the opposite of what many owners assume.

Location matters too. Growth varies between open water, the Intracoastal and canal systems, and a boat in a quiet canal with warm still water can foul noticeably faster than one on a breezy open dock.

Diver cleaning, and doing it without damage

Our divers clean the hull, running gear, propellers and waterline in the water, which avoids hauling the boat out for what is routine maintenance.

The important part is technique rather than effort. Antifouling paint works by releasing biocide slowly from its surface, and aggressive cleaning removes paint along with the growth - which shortens the life of a bottom job significantly and costs far more than the cleaning saved. Cleaning appropriately for the paint condition means the coating keeps working for its intended life.

We also look while we are down there. Divers see things owners cannot: the state of the antifouling and how much life it has left, anodes that are spent, damage to running gear, a prop that has been dinged, and growth patterns that indicate the boat is sitting differently than it should.

Anodes matter more than most owners realize

Sacrificial anodes protect underwater metals from galvanic corrosion by giving themselves up first. When they are gone, the next least noble metal in the system starts corroding instead - and that is usually something expensive attached to your drivetrain.

Anodes in warm salt water are consumed faster than in cold or brackish water, and a marina with stray current in the water eats them faster still. They are cheap, replacing them is routine, and letting them go entirely is one of the more expensive economies available to a boat owner.

Intervals

The right interval depends on how much the boat moves, where it sits, the water temperature through the year, and the condition of the antifouling. There is no single answer, and any company that quotes one without seeing your boat is guessing.

What we can say is that regular cleaning on a schedule costs less than periodic heavy cleaning, and it is far kinder to the paint. A maintenance program that keeps both the bottom and the topsides on a set schedule is how most owners here end up handling it.

What we report back

Every clean comes with a note on what the diver actually found, because that is often more valuable than the cleaning itself.

The state of the antifouling and roughly how much life is left in it, so a bottom job is something you plan rather than something you discover. Anode condition and whether they are due. Any damage to running gear - a dinged prop, a bent shaft, a rope wrap you did not know about. And the growth pattern itself, which tells us whether the boat is sitting level and whether any area is fouling faster than the rest.

Owners who are not on the boat weekly tend to value this more than the clean. Knowing the bottom is in good order, or knowing early that something is not, is worth having.

Cleaning intervals and antifouling life

There is a genuine tension between cleaning often enough to keep the boat efficient and cleaning so aggressively that the antifouling is worn away early, and the way through it is technique rather than frequency.

Soft growth cleaned gently and regularly comes off with minimal effect on the paint. Hard growth left to establish has to be removed mechanically, and that removes paint with it. So the counter-intuitive result is that frequent gentle cleaning generally extends antifouling life compared with occasional heavy cleaning, even though the boat is being touched more often.

Paint type matters too. Ablative coatings are designed to wear, hard coatings are not, and the appropriate cleaning approach differs. We look at what is on your hull rather than applying one method to everything.

Boats that sit

A vessel that has not moved in months is the hardest case, and it is common here where a good number of boats belong to owners who are not on the coast year-round.

Still, warm water and no flow is ideal for settlement, so a boat that sits fouls faster than one in regular use. It also fouls unevenly - the shaded side and the areas around running gear go first.

For owners who are away, the useful arrangement is a scheduled clean whether or not anyone is here to notice, along with the report afterwards. Finding out in October that the bottom has been heavily fouled since July is not a good way to discover it.

Safety and access

In-water work is diving, and it happens around moving vessels, shore power and running gear.

We coordinate with the marina or the dock owner where required, and we ask that engines and thrusters are not run while a diver is in the water - which sounds obvious and is worth stating explicitly, because it is the one thing that makes this work genuinely dangerous.

Where a boat is on a lift rather than in the water, the job is different and often easier, and we will tell you which approach suits your setup.

How often should the bottom be cleaned?
Boats kept in the water year-round usually need cleaning every four to eight weeks, since Gulf growth comes back quickly. Idle and snowbird boats foul faster because nothing disturbs the growth. A recurring dive schedule keeps the hull clean and performance up.
Do you paint the bottom or do repairs?
No, we clean only - we do not apply bottom paint or do fiberglass or gelcoat repair. Our job is to keep a painted or bare bottom free of slime and barnacles with in-water diving. If you need paint or structural work, we can point you to a reputable yard.
Is in-water cleaning allowed here?
Yes, but Florida has turbidity rules about debris in the water, so our divers use soft methods and limit what comes off. For a heavily fouled bottom we may recommend a haul-out and pressure wash instead of scrubbing it all into the bay. We keep the job clean for your boat and the water.
