What a ceramic coating is, and what it is not

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cures into a hard, thin layer chemically bonded to the surface it was applied to. That bond is the difference between a coating and a wax: wax sits on top of gelcoat and is gradually stripped away by sun, salt and washing, while a coating becomes part of the surface.

The practical benefits are consistent. It repels water and salt rather than letting them sit and dry on the surface. It resists UV, which is the main thing degrading gelcoat on this coast. And it makes cleaning substantially easier, because contaminants have far less to grip - which is the benefit owners notice most, since routine washing becomes quicker and the black streaks that plague tired gelcoat largely stop bonding.

What it is not is armour. A coating does not prevent scratches, it does not stop impact damage, and it will not make a boat maintenance-free. It also does not fix anything underneath it.

Preparation is most of the job

This is the part that determines whether a coating is worth the money, and it is where the cost mostly sits.

A coating locks in the surface it is applied over. Applied to oxidised gelcoat, it seals the chalk in and you have paid to preserve a dull finish. Applied over polish residue, it does not bond properly and fails early. Applied to a surface with embedded contamination, it fixes that in place too.

So the sequence is decontamination, then correction to bring the gelcoat back to a sound, glossy surface, then a residue-free wipe-down, then application in suitable conditions. On a boat that needs significant correction, that preparation is the larger part of the invoice - and skipping it is the single reason coatings disappoint people.

Anyone quoting a ceramic coating without discussing the condition of your gelcoat first is quoting for the easy half.

Is it worth it

The honest way to think about it is total cost over several years rather than the price on the day.

A boat kept outside on this coast needs waxing repeatedly, and each wax means labor. A coating costs more once and lasts substantially longer, so for a boat you intend to keep, the arithmetic generally favors it - particularly when you include the reduced effort in routine washing over that period.

It favors it less if you are selling in the near term, if the boat is stored under cover and out of the sun, or if the gelcoat is too far gone to correct properly, in which case you would be coating a surface that is not worth preserving.

Living with a coated boat

Coatings are durable, not permanent, and they last longest when they are looked after.

Rinse salt off rather than letting it dry on the surface. Wash with a pH-neutral product and a clean mitt - abrasive cleaners and aggressive chemistry will degrade a coating over time. Avoid pressure washing the coated surfaces closely.

A coating can be topped with a compatible maintenance product periodically, which refreshes hydrophobic behavior and extends its life. That is normally part of a maintenance program, and it is how coated boats stay looking coated rather than gradually reverting.

What we tell you before you commit

Three things, honestly, before anyone spends this kind of money.

What condition your gelcoat is actually in, and therefore how much correction is needed. That is the larger part of the cost on most boats, and a quote that does not address it is not a real quote.

How long it should realistically last on your boat, in your conditions. A vessel on an open dock in full Florida sun is a harder test than one in a covered slip, and we would rather set the expectation properly than have you disappointed in year two.

What maintenance it needs. A coating is durable, not permanent, and how it is washed determines how long it performs. Aggressive chemistry and pressure washing shorten it.

If any of those answers means a coating is the wrong purchase for your situation, we will say so. Wax on a boat you are selling next year is the better spend, and telling you that costs us the larger job.

Coating other surfaces

Gelcoat is the main application, but it is not the only one worth considering.

Metal - stainless rails, cleats and hardware - benefits considerably, because a coated surface sheds the salt that causes rust bloom in the first place. On a boat where the stainless is a constant chore, this is often the change owners appreciate most.

Glass and clear surfaces can be treated with compatible products that improve water shedding, which matters on a windscreen underway.

Canvas and upholstery take fabric-specific protective treatments rather than a gelcoat coating, and they are a different product with a shorter life.

Timing an application

The practical window matters more than with wax, because a coating has to cure.

Application needs a surface that is dry and stable, out of direct blazing sun, and conditions that let the product flash and cure correctly. In Florida that generally means working earlier in the day and avoiding the wettest, hottest stretch where it can be arranged.

The boat then needs a period before heavy exposure - it should not be rained on or run hard immediately. We will tell you what that means for your schedule when we book it, because a coating applied around a boating weekend rarely gets the cure it needs.

It is also worth doing after any other work rather than before. Applying a coating and then having the boat compounded, drilled or worked on is spending the money twice.

Comparing quotes

Coating quotes vary enormously and almost always because they describe different amounts of preparation rather than different products.

Ask what correction is included and to what standard - single-stage polish, or full compound and polish. Ask what happens if the gelcoat turns out to need more than expected. Ask which surfaces are included: hull sides, topsides, non-skid, metal. And ask what the realistic expected life is on a boat kept the way yours is kept, rather than the figure on the bottle.

Two quotes thousands apart are usually a coating over a light polish against a coating over full correction, and only one of those is worth buying.
