What oxidation actually is
Gelcoat is a pigmented resin surface, and Florida sun degrades it continuously. As the surface breaks down it becomes microscopically rough and porous, which scatters light instead of reflecting it. That is what "chalky" means, and it is why a faded hull leaves white residue on your hand.
The important consequence is that oxidation is not dirt. No amount of washing removes it, because there is nothing sitting on the surface to remove - the surface itself has changed. Owners often conclude their boat simply cannot be brought back, when in fact the gloss is still there under a thin degraded layer.
Compounding and polishing
Correction works by removing that degraded layer to expose sound gelcoat underneath.
Compounding is the aggressive stage, using an abrasive to cut through oxidation. It removes material, which is why it is not something to do casually or repeatedly - gelcoat is a finite thickness and a boat that has been heavily compounded several times has less of it left.
Polishing refines what compounding leaves behind, removing the fine marks the compound made and bringing up gloss.
Protection seals the corrected surface. This is not optional: freshly corrected gelcoat is clean, porous and completely unprotected, and left bare in Florida sun it will oxidise faster than it did before.
How much correction a boat needs depends on how far the oxidation has gone. Light chalking may need only a polish. A boat that has sat outside untended for several seasons may need a full multi-stage cut, and occasionally the honest answer is that the gelcoat is too far gone to correct and that paint is the sensible option.
Wax, sealant or ceramic
Correction is the work; protection determines how long it lasts.
Carnauba wax looks superb immediately, and on this coast it is a seasonal product at best. Sun and salt strip it, and a boat kept outside will need it several times a year.
Synthetic sealants last longer than wax and give a slightly different look - a little sharper, a little less warm.
Ceramic coatings bond to corrected gelcoat rather than sitting on it, and last far longer than either. They cost more up front and the surface preparation has to be right, because a coating locks in whatever it is applied over.
For an owner who has just paid for correction, the protection decision is really about how often you want to repeat the exercise. Wax means doing this again soon; a coating means the correction lasts.
Timing
Correction is best done when the boat can stay dry for the process and when the surface is not baking, which on this coast usually means earlier in the day and outside the hottest months where possible.
It is also worth doing before a boat is sold or listed. Corrected, protected gelcoat photographs dramatically better than chalky topsides, and it changes the impression a buyer forms in the first thirty seconds.

How far gone is too far
Owners frequently ask whether a badly faded boat is recoverable, and the honest answer depends on how much sound gelcoat remains beneath the degraded layer.
Correction works by removing material. If a boat has chalked lightly, that layer is thin and there is plenty underneath. If it has been outside untended for many seasons, or if it has already been heavily compounded several times in its life, there may not be enough gelcoat left to cut into safely.
The signs that a boat is near that limit are worth knowing: gelcoat that has gone translucent in places, color that varies noticeably across a panel, or areas where a previous correction has cut through to the laminate. On an older boat, gelcoat thickness varies across the hull anyway, and edges, corners and raised moldings are always thinnest.
Where we think a boat is at that point, we will say so rather than take the job. Cutting through gelcoat is not something that can be undone, and the honest alternative - paint - is a different trade and a different conversation.
The order things have to happen in
Correction is a sequence and skipping steps shows up later rather than immediately.
The surface has to be genuinely clean before any abrasive touches it, because compounding over grit drags contaminants across the gelcoat and puts marks in that then need removing. Decontamination comes before correction, always.
Correction goes from more aggressive to less, and each stage has to remove the marks left by the previous one. A boat that has been compounded and then waxed without polishing will look glossy in soft light and show fine swirl marks in direct sun - which on a white hull in Florida is most of the time.
Protection goes on last, on a surface that has been cleaned of polishing residue. Applying a sealant or coating over polish oils gives you protection that does not bond and fails early.
Non-skid, canvas and the parts that are not gelcoat
Correction applies to smooth gelcoat. The rest of the boat needs different handling and is worth mentioning because it is where careless work shows.
Non-skid decks cannot be compounded - the texture is the safety feature, and polishing it flat makes a deck slippery. Non-skid gets cleaned and, where appropriate, treated with a product that protects without filling the texture.
Canvas, isinglass and clears are not part of a correction and should not be exposed to compound. Overspray and dust from machine polishing settles on them, so they are protected before work starts rather than cleaned afterwards.
Stainless is polished separately, and it is worth doing at the same time - rust bleeding from neglected hardware onto freshly corrected topsides undoes the work within a season.
How often correction should be needed
Ideally, rarely. Correction removes gelcoat, so a boat that needs it every couple of years is a boat losing material it cannot replace.
The way to avoid that cycle is protection that actually lasts through a Florida year, and washing that keeps salt and contamination off the surface between details. A boat on a maintenance schedule with sound protection should need correction infrequently - the gloss is maintained rather than periodically rescued.
If you have had a boat corrected more than once in a few years, the useful question is not which compound to use next time but what is stripping the protection in between.
